For years I have struggled with medical issues and the impact my health has had on my ability to make consistent work. Pain and vertigo meant I could not work on the wheel as often as I wanted and needed to. Fatigue sapped my motivation. Glaze issues sapped my enjoyment of my process.
The switch from throwing to slip casting is my workaround. When I am feeling “well” I can work at my wheel making new forms that I then create a mold of. This enables me to make multiples of my pieces with much less physical strain to my body.
Each piece is then hand painted with a combination of latex and wax resists and store bought and home-made glazes. This fusion of commercial and studio glazes creates a reliable dynamic palette, something that I had been missing for a while.
It’s been a long time since I have been this excited about what I am making. I hope you like it as much as I do!
